HANCOCK — The numbers of locals with COVID-19 and deaths related to the coronavirus continue to rise, state and regional health officials said Thursday.

Gogebic County has had a total of 306 positives and another 126 probables as of Thursday, according to the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department. This includes 181 recoveries, nine deaths, 131 active cases and 111 cases where a person is beyond the two-week quarantine period but hasn’t reached the 30-day mark to be considered a recovered case.

The state coronavirus website lists Gogebic County as having a total of 11 deaths through Thursday, with WUPHD Health Officer Kate Beer telling the Daily Globe she is looking into why the number of fatalities linked to the virus in the county is different. She said it may be due to a variety of reasons, such as coding issues or numbers not reaching her office yet.

Ontonagon County has had 94 positives and 16 probables, according to the WUPHD’s Thursday update, with 39 of those being considered active. Ontonagon County has yet to have a death connected to the virus.

The five counties of Baraga, Gogebic, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties that the health department serves have had a total of 1,639 cases over the pandemic, according to the department’s Thursday update, with 22 deaths and 346 active cases. Houghton County has had nine deaths and Baraga County has had four.

Michigan has had a total of 171,220 confirmed cases and 7,298 deaths during the pandemic, including the 3,675 cases and 41 deaths across the state that were added to the counts Thursday.

In Wisconsin, the Iron County Health Department reported 203 COVID-positive Iron County residents and 38 probables as of Thursday. This includes 58 active cases, as well as four deaths and 14 cases that have required hospitalization since the virus was first detected here in March.

Ashland County has had 282 positive cases and three deaths, while Vilas County has had 585 positive cases and seven deaths.

There have been a total of 214,996 confirmed cases across Wisconsin, according to the state’s COVID website, with an additional 11,709 probable cases. There have been 2003 deaths.
