Wakefield man arrested for Bessemer break-ins

BESSEMER — A Wakefield man is in custody after being accused of being involved in a home invasion and several car break-ins in the city of Bessemer last week.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police’s Wakefield Post were dispatched to the scene of an alleged home invasion in Bessemer on Nov. 6. A home and a car had both been entered, according to a MSP news release, where two purses and roughly $245 were allegedly stolen.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office had received reports of four other car break-ins in Bessemer around this time, according to the MSP report, and the law enforcement agencies developed a suspect in the cases.

The 29-year-old Wakefield man was arrested on a bond violation for allegedly using narcotics while on bond for other home invasions, according to the news release.

A search of the suspect’s phone allegedly showed his movement on the day of the break-ins as matching all the locations.

Following his arrest, Andrew Schmidt was arraigned on charges of 1st degree home invasion, use of methamphetamine and breaking and entering of a vehicle.
