Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
IRONWOOD, Mich. — Joan Mockross, 86, of Pine Lake in Oma, Wisconsin, died Oct. 28, 2020, in Ironwood from complications due to COVID-19.
Joan was born on July 18, 1934, in Ironwood, the daughter of John and Sena (Bradley) Erickson, and grew up near Little Girl’s Point. She attended Roosevelt School, graduated from Luther L. Wright High School, and married her high school sweetheart, Carl, in 1955. She attended the University of Minnesota and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin.
Joan worked for Gogebic County as a social worker for 25 years, retiring with a Masters in Social Work. She went on to get her real estate license and joined the J.W. Huss Real Estate team.
After retirement, Carl and Joan spent winters in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, making many new friends, exploring the area, and visiting national parks.
Joan loved Lake Superior, camping, photography, swimming, and observing nature. She was often the first to be swimming in the lake in the spring. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with friends and family at Pine Lake. She will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, sense of humor, strength, and of course, her smile.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Sena Erickson; and sister, Carol Schoening.
Joan is survived by her husband of 64 years, Carl; and daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Dan Johnson.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Joan’s caregivers during her final years.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a celebration of Joan’s life will be planned at a later date.
The family has chosen McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home to honor Joan’s legacy of life. You can leave a condolence or a tribute at mckevittpatrickfuneralhome.com.
