Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Ironwood — The Ironwood Area Schools is likely staying the course for the next few years after the district’s board of education renewed Superintendent Travis Powell’s contract for another three years Monday.
“I’m grateful to the board for renewing my contract. I’m looking forward to what we’ll be able to accomplish together over the next three years,” Powell said after the meeting. “I enjoy my job and the opportunity to continue it.”
He said the language of the contract was the same as his prior contract — which was also for three years — and the renewal simply extends the terms for another three years.
Board president Clancey Byrne praised Powell’s leadership.
“Everybody was in agreement that we’re building something here and need to continue (the effort), and we wanted to give three years so we have time for it to incubate and grow,” he told the Daily Globe.
The board’s most recent superintendent evaluation took place in December and found Powell to be “highly effective” for the 2020-2021 school year.
In other action, the board:
—Authorized the district to call for bids for work on the Luther L. Wright K-12 School’s roof. There is a leak where the building’s new addition meets the old structure, according to Powell.
—Voted to contract with SETSEG for the administration of the district’s COBRA and FMLA processing services. Although the exact cost hasn’t been determined, Powell said it is estimated to cost the district $5,100 for the company to administer those benefits for the year.
