Iron County votes today

Hurley — Iron County voters are heading to the polls today to cast their ballots in Wisconsin’s spring election.

Although the local races will depend on where voters live, everyone in the county will have the chance to vote in the race for state superintendent of public instruction between Jill Underly and Deborah Kerr, as well as the judicial race for a seat on the District 3 Court of Appeals between Gregory Gill and Rick Cveykus.

Many of the local races feature unopposed candidates running for either re-election or a seat on the board, however, there are three contested local races and a ballot measure to be decided.

In Mercer, incumbent supervisors Opal Roberts and Eric Snow are joined by challenger James Schmidt in seeking two seats on the town board. Mercer voters will also decide whether the town should adopt a 0.5% Premier Resort Area Tax on certain purchases as a way to generate additional revenue that would be devoted to work on the town’s roads.

In Montreal, voters in Ward 2 will decide between Bill Stutz and Kelly Traczyk to determine who will represent them on the city’s council for the upcoming term.

Voters within the boundaries of the Hurley School District will decide who will replace Joe Simonich on the board, after Simonich decided against seeking another term. Three candidates — two on the ballot and one write-in — are vying for the seat. Jessica Leinon-Novascone and Jack Brown both appear on the ballot, while Sharon Ofstad filed the necessary paperwork to qualify as a write-in candidate.

Polls in today’s election are open until 8 p.m.
