ANTIOCH, Ill. - James B. Sertic, 88 years old, of Antioch, Illinois, passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 6, 2021.
He was born May 4, 1933, in Ramsay, Michigan, the son of the late Peter and Mary (neé Kapets) Sertic, settling in Antioch in 1988. James proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, sailing around the world on the USS FDR. James graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, and in 1972 graduated with a master's degree in education from Northern Illinois University. Before his retirement in 1993, James taught social studies and coached at Round Lake Area Schools for over 35 years. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking, model building, watching sports and especially being with his family. On June 16, 1960, he married Nancy Edwards at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ironwood, Michigan.
Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Nancy; four children, Robert Sertic of Antioch, James (Lisa) Sertic of Portage, Michigan, Ann (Michael) Galt of Fishers, Indiana, and Paul (Deane) Sertic of Franklin, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, Tony, Grady and Genevieve Sertic, Katrina (Cory) Livingston, Marissa Galt, and Erika and Ethan Sertic; two great-granddaughters, Katherine and Alexandra; a brother, Robert (Nancy) Sertic of Ironwood, Michigan; and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a brother, George Sertic; and sister, Jeannette Thelen.
A memorial Mass, followed by military honors, will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, at Our Lady of the Lakes-St. Peter Catholic Church at 557 Lake St., in Antioch. Interment will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Ironwood, Michigan.
