Hurley — The Hurley City Council on May 11 directed Gary Laguna, city water manager, to see if the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources would have its lead service line replacement project grant agreement ready in time for a May 19 special meeting.

The earlier the documents are signed the sooner the project can begin and helps to ensure the planned 40 water line replacements can occur this construction season, according to city officials.

The council also approved a recommendation from the public works committee to abandon city wells on Hurley K-12 School property.

The council took no action on a recommendation from finance to advertise for a water meter reader. The council opted to combine the duties with current city staff and look at training in a new person once the new meter system is in place.

In other business the council approved:

—A police, fire and license committee recommendation to approve a combination class B beer and liquor license to Lilypiper, LLC, 405 Silver St., Sandra Pertile, agent for Bucko’s Saloon.

—Amending a special event liquor license for Idle Hour/Club Sierra/Silver Dollar to allow for an outdoor tent on June 5.

—Appointing new library board members Pat Kangas (three-year term), and Betsy Traczyk (one-year term), and re-appointing Kathy Byrns (three-year term) and Joanne Bruneau (one-year term).

—Zeroing out approximately $667,000 payment in lieu of taxes balance due from the city water and sewer department.

—A resolution allowing short-term borrowing for capital outlay.

—Completing the application for up to $100,000 in grant funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Rural Development.

—Tabling discussion of changes to the city employee handbook.
