Summer classes return at the DAP

IRONWOOD — Summer art classes will return this month at the Downtown Art Place. The programs will provide participants with opportunities to learn new skills from artists from the local studio.

According to a news release from the DAP, classes will be held from July 26 to Aug. 12. This year’s events will kick off with “Ceramics with Candace” at the DAP Clay Studio on July 26. The complete summer classroom schedule can be found on the DAP website.

The website says the classes are open to all ages, but children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

There will be two types of programs this year: ‘Dabble @ the DAP’ and ‘DAP Outdoors’ classes. ‘Dabble’ classes will meet at the DAP Clay Studio and the Downtown Art Park, which is located across the street from the art gallery. The outdoor classes will meet at different locations in Ironwood, Bessemer and Wakefield.

‘DAP Outdoors’ will include meteorology, geology, natural sciences and animal programs. The programs will present scientific information to participants and include on-site art projects led by artists from the DAP.

This year will also see the return of the DAP’s indoor summer art classes. Susan Spaete, the coordinator of educational programs at the DAP, said that all classes were held outdoors last year to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

According to the release, most of this year’s programs will still be held outdoors and social distancing guidelines will continue to be observed. Program participants who have not been vaccinated will be required to wear masks. Masks and hand sanitizer will be provided at the outdoors programs.

To participate, interested parties are required to pre-register at least 24 hours in advance of the DAP classes. A registration form that can be used to sign up for classes in both types of programs is available for download at downtownartplace.com. All classes are limited to 10 participants.

The DAP plans to resume more activities in September and is developing its future programming.
