Ironwood — The Ironwood City Commission on Monday approved demolitions and scheduled public hearings to address inaction on other dilapidated properties.

The commission authorized advertisements to bid for the demolition of a residential dwelling at 400 E. Tamarack St. The structure is already under public ownership and the city has access to the property, according to Scott Erickson, city manager.

“It’s in disrepair with holes in the roof and needs to be demolished,” Erickson said.

The commission authorized advertisements to bid for the demolition of 716 Garvey St. The property is a trailer that has fallen into disrepair and while the property is going through different ownerships the current owner is willing to turn the property over to the city for demolition, Erickson said.

The commission approved a resolution to condemn an exterior stairwell structure at 420 McLeod Ave. The building itself is not condemned, but the stairwell is in a hazardous condition, Erickson said.

The city was working through the process of repairing or removing the stairwell with the previous owner, who has since passed away, Erickson said. The city is now working with other family members to either follow through on the process or have the city do it and charge the cost back to the property.

The commission then approved a resolution to schedule a public hearing for 5:25 p.m. Sept. 13, regarding the condemnation of a structure at 110 E. Birch St. The hearing is to consider declaring the structure a public nuisance.

The front porch has partially collapsed and is pulling away from the main structure, Erickson said. There are holes in the roof, the wood foundation is failing and the building is starting to lean, making the building a hazard in its present condition.
