WAUSAU, Wis. - Lynus D. Kelly Jr., 85, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021, in Wausau.
Born on Nov. 30, 1935, son of Lynus Sr. and Pauline (Newton) Kelly, he attended Watersmeet Township School, in Watersmeet, Michigan, graduating with the class of 1953.
After high school, he went to Ironwood Junior College for two years and then joined the U.S. Army. Upon completion of his military service, he enrolled in Michigan State University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
His first position out of MSU was with the IBM Corporation in Milwaukee, which he held for several years. He then entered the United States Foreign Service, Agency for International Development (AID). This took him first to Washington, D.C., and then to Asia for thirty years. As a member of AID, he traveled extensively in the Far East and spent nine years in Vietnam during the war. Later, he went to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Thailand.
Upon retirement, he resided in Florida and enjoyed spending summers in the northwoods at the Gateway Lodge in Land O' Lakes. He continued as a consultant to the U.S. government in Asian affairs.
Survivors include sisters, Kathleen (Frank) Kuchevar, of Watersmeet, and Rosemary (Dave) Berkmyre, of Florida; and brothers, Tom (Sharon) of Spencer, Wisconsin, and David (MaryPat), of Watersmeet. He is further survived by nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William D. Kelly.
A private burial was held. The family was assisted by Gaffney-Busha of Eagle River, Wisconsin.
