Motorcyclist injured in Hurley crash

HURLEY - A 74-year-old Marquette area woman was injured Monday following a crash with a pickup truck in Hurley.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:21 p.m., when a pickup truck driving west on U.S. 2 attempted to make a left turn onto U.S. 51, according to information from Iron County Sheriff Paul Samardich. The temporary intersection is part of a detour around the construction of a roundabout to be completed this fall.

A sheriff's office deputy who was stopped on U.S. 51 while waiting to turn east onto U.S. 2, observed the pickup turn into the path of an oncoming motorcycle traveling east on U.S. 2.

The deputy notified emergency dispatch of the crash and provided aid to the injured motorcyclist until medical personnel arrived at the scene, according to Samardich. The woman was transported by Beacon Ambulance Service to Aspirus Ironwood Hospital and later flown to another facility due to the extent of her injuries.

The driver of the truck, 74-year-old Bradenton, Florida, man was uninjured.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating and brought in its accident reconstruction unit to complete a crash report due to the severity of the crash.

Additional law enforcement arrived at the intersection to reroute westbound traffic from U.S. 51 to U.S. 2 via County Road D, and eastbound traffic through Silver Street downtown to the highway business route connection in Ironwood.

The supporting units arrived from Hurley Police Department, Ironwood Public Safety Department, Hurley Fire and Rescue, and Iron County Highway Department.
