Ironwood - The fall semester at Gogebic Community Campus started last week. The college marked the occasion with a week of complimentary lunches at the Ironwood campus.

"Week One Eats," as it was marketed kicked off with a pizza lunch with college president George McNulty on Monday, Aug. 23.

"What a great day on campus!" the college posted on Facebook last week. "We all welcome the energy and excitement brought by our students. We are so lucky."

Lunches continued through the week at the Courtside Cafe in the Lindquist Student Center. Vice President of Academic Affairs David Darrow joined students for spaghetti on Wednesday. Thursday brought lunch from the outdoor grill with Vice President of Business Erik Guenard.

"We did it because our Courtside Cafe is transitioning to be the Samson's Canteen, so we thought it would be fun to just give students free meals during the first week," said Kim Zechovich, GCC director of marketing and community relations.

The Samson's Canteen is now open inside the bookstore - moving the campus eatery from the Lindquist Center. It offers sandwiches, salads, beverages and candy, she said.

Adam Smith of Ashland, Wisconsin, told the Daily Globe Tuesday morning he's enjoyed the beginning of the new term.

"It's pretty interesting," said the 33-year-old student in the CDL program. "Just all the new information and learning stuff I didn't know about trucking, becoming more aware of how people drive. It's pretty cool."

Tyler Wilapski, 26, of Ironwood and formerly Minneapolis, said he is "loving it" at GCC.

He said he enjoys all the hands-on work in the construction technology program, calling it "perfect" for him.
