RAMSAY, Mich. - James R. Scholar, 86, of Ramsay, passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2021.
Jim was born on July 25, 1935, in Ramsay, a son of Frederic P. and Bessie M. (Celik) Scholar. He graduated from A.D. Johnston High School in Bessemer.
Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, and was honorably discharged with the rank of master sergeant.
He returned home and attended Gogebic Community College and Northern Michigan University, earning a bachelor's degree in education.
Jim taught in the L'Anse/Baraga school system for 30 years. He was very active as a coach, mentor and educational advisor.
After his retirement, Jim spent many years actively involved on the planning and zoning committees, church boards and shared much of his time giving back to his hometown.
Jim is survived by two brothers, Frederic M., Traverse City, and Dennis, Asheville, North Carolina; his sister-in-law, Jane Scholar, Marion, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. He was a very special and proud uncle to many chosen family as well.
He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Ruth Scholar.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m., preceded by a rosary that will be prayed at 9:30 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 407 Ascherman St., in Wakefield, with the Rev. Dominic Agyapong, celebrant.
Following the Mass, the family will greet friends and lunch will be served at the parish hall.
Rite of Committal will take place at noon, at Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer, where full military honors will be accorded by the Bessemer American Legion Post 27 and Bessemer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3673 Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests Mass offerings to Immaculate Conception Church.
