L'ANSE, Mich. - George J. Haapala, 98, of Bruce Crossing, passed away Sept. 13, 2021, at Bayside Village in L'Anse.
He was born on Sept. 1, 1923, in Paynesville, to the late Henry and Marie (Morti) Haapala.
George served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he worked on the family farm and did body work on cars in the Bruce Crossing area. George played music with various groups and bands. He especial loved to play the violin and horn.
George was a great caretaker for his family. He assisted many of his family members in their elderly years. Near the end of George's life, the roles were reversed with his niece Joan, taking care of him.
George is survived by his sister, Eileen Huhta; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, at the Hillside Cemetery in Bruce Crossing. Military honors will be performed by the Ontonagon County Veteran's Association.
