George Joseph Briar

WEST OLIVE, Mich. - George Joseph Briar, 88 of West Olive, Michigan, went home to be with God on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021.

George was born on Feb. 19, 1933, in Ironwood, the son of John Joseph Briar and Pauline Agnes (Krispinsky) Briar. He attended L. L. Wright High School and graduated in 1951. He served in the U. S. Army from 1953 to 1956.

George graduated from Michigan State University in 1962. He taught English and later became a school librarian and media specialist at three different Muskegon area high schools, retiring from the Fruitport School District.

On April 18, 1998, George was united in marriage to Elaine Helen Schiele.

He is survived by his loving wife and one daughter, Ondra; brother, Dennis (Susan) Briar of Troy, Michigan; nieces, Laura Abercrombie Wheeler of Kannapolis, North Carolina, and Sarah Briar of Troy; nephews, Gary Briar of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Daniel (Leonore) Briar of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Michael (Amy) Abercrombie of Oak Harbor, Washington, and Nicholas Briar of Troy.

George was proceeded in death by his parents, John and Pauline; sisters, Agnes Briar Negrini and Philomena Briar Abercrombie; and brother, Vincent Briar.

He was an active member of St. Luke's Parish, at Grand Valley State University, in Allendale, where a memorial Mass will be offered.
