Hurley - Fifth graders at Hurley School District completed a project they started before summer vacation on Wednesday. The students harvested vegetables that they planted in the school garden last spring as fourth graders.

The classes harvested the potatoes, onions and carrots that they planted in the garden at the end of the 2020-2021 school year. Before they started digging, they circled up for a lesson on how to harvest the vegetables and a show-and-tell of some vegetables and fruit.

The students were led by FoodWIse educators with Extension Iron County – University of Wisconsin-Madison as part of an agreement with the school to provide information about nutrition for students in elementary grades.

The FoodWIse educators present were Deb Leonard and Marisa Perlberg. Also present were Stephanie Bakker, FoodWIse coordinator for Ashland, Bayfield and Iron Counties, and Jill Sanders, the FoodWIse regional program manager.

The students were from the classes of Hurley School District's fifth grade teachers, Kristin Kolesar and Laurie Lund. Kolesar and substitute teacher Monica Kolpin were also present at the harvest.

They were allowed to take some of the vegetables home with them along with recipes and information about potatoes from the FoodWIse educators. The educators also served refreshments to the students, including water infused with the herbs from the school garden.

According to the Extension Iron County website, FoodWIse is federally funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education and the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program. They teach at the individual, community and systems levels.
