Hurley - The new roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 2 and U.S. 51 opened to traffic on Wednesday.
Construction on the area around roundabout is scheduled to continue quietly until Oct. 28, according to project development engineer Kai Kilen from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
Kilen said that the project has proceeded according to plan and that they are entering the last stage of construction on the roundabout.
In the next three weeks, crews will remove the temporary lanes used to divert traffic around the intersection during construction over the summer, and flatten the embankment for the removed bridge over U.S. 2. They will also lay down grass seed, plant shrubs and add landscaping, he said.
He said that they will also install drainage to protect the roundabout from water damage.
Construction crews will also reinstall the driveway at the nearby rest stop on U.S. 51 that was removed for the project.
Kilen said that the project will be completed without fanfare on Oct. 28.
