Bessemer — The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Gogebic County Courthouse in Bessemer on Tuesday and the board discussed a national settlement and two information technology-related issues.

The board authorized the Gogebic County administrator to pursue participation in the national opioid settlement. There are ongoing cases involving pharmaceutical companies that handle the distribution of opioids and CVS, Walgreens and Walmart have settled outside of court. County Commissioner Joe Bonovetz said the county could receive some funds from this settlement for the damages caused by the opioid epidemic on area residents.

In other matters, the county board was also granted approval by the federal government to shorten their website’s domain name from gogebiccountymi.gov to gogebic.gov effective immediately. The county board members will have the option to use the shortened domain name in their email addresses.

Information Technology Specialist Brandon Tauer said that he recently went to Traverse City for the 2021 Merit Broadband Summit. He said that one thing he picked up on at the summit was that Michigan communities are putting fiber optic cables with new water and sewer lines in the ground.

He said that the county may consider doing this in future infrastructure projects.
