Ross Solberg takes the oath to become the new sheriff of Gogebic County from County Clerk and Register of Deeds Ramona Collins, left, Tuesday morning in Bessemer. At right are Solberg's wife, Paula, and their grandchild Ava Smith, 5. The brief ceremony was held on the steps of the Gogebic County Jail and was attended by a dozen county and other officials. Solberg replaces Pete Matonich, who is retiring after 23 years with the department, the last 12 as a sheriff. Solberg's appointment is through the election this November, according to Collins, when voters will select someone to fill the remainder of the current four-year term ending in 2024.
