Rev. Fr. Allan Joseph Mayotte

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Rev. Fr. Allan Joseph Mayotte, 87, of Marquette, died Thursday morning, Jan. 13, 2022, at Norlite Nursing Center in Marquette.

Fr. Mayotte was born on Dec. 23, 1934, in Marquette to the late Clifford J. and Marie (Tousignant) Mayotte.

Fr. Mayotte attended the Salvatorian Seminary in St. Nazianz, Wisconsin, received a bachelor's degree from Sacred Heart Seminary in Franklin, Wisconsin, and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth, Michigan. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Thomas Noa on June 4, 1960, at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.

Fr. Mayotte served as associate pastor at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Ironwood, St. Ann Catholic Church, Menominee, St. Anne Catholic Church, Escanaba, St. Joseph & St. Patrick Catholic Church, Hancock, Sacred Heart of Jesus, L'Anse, and Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, Sault Ste. Marie. He was then relieved for chaplaincy in the U.S. Air Force until September 1973 when he became pastor at St. Anne Catholic Church, Chassell, then moving to St. Joseph Parish, Rudyard, Holy Family Mission, Barbeau, St. Jude Catholic Church, White Pine, St. Ann Catholic Church, Bergland. Fr. Mayotte served as Dean of the Ironwood Deanery from January 1985 until July 1999. During this time, he was pastor at Immaculate Conception Catholic Parish, Wakefield, St. Catherine Catholic Church, Marenisco, St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Lake Linden, and St. Joseph Parish, Perkins.

Fr. Mayotte received his senior priest status in July 2000 where he went on to serve as chaplain for the Carmelite Sisters at the Monastery of the Holy Cross. He very much enjoyed this assignment and the Sisters loved having him there.

Fr. Mayotte is survived by his sisters, Mary Bradley and Carol Keeler, both of Marquette; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Layne; and two brothers, Richard and Kenneth Mayotte.

Reception of Fr. Mayotte's body will take place at St. Louis the King Catholic Church in Harvey on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 10:30 a.m., with visitation to follow from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. in the church with Rev. Fr. Timothy Ekaitis, Vicar General of the Diocese of Marquette, presiding, Rev. Larry Van Damme, homilist and concelebrated by priests of the Diocese of Marquette. Members of Bishop Baraga the Snowshoe Priest Assembly Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus will act as honor guard.

A luncheon will be held in Father Gauthier Hall following the Mass. Entombment will take place in the Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
