Ironwood - Gogebic Community College staff and their families took over Mt. Zion on Friday evening as part of the college's Staff Appreciation Day. Staff were treated to free lift tickets and ski rentals and the tubing hill was reserved for staff members and their families.

The college also invited students to be honored and be part of the festivities.

"It was great to see students, faculty and staff enjoying the amenities of Mt. Zion," said GCC president George McNulty, who took to the slopes with his 4-year-old daughter, January. It was her first time on skis. "The weather couldn't have been better Friday evening," he added.

This marked the return of the annual event since the COVID-19 pandemic. GCC employees and their families were treated to pizza, pop and cookies in the chalet.

"It was a good turnout it was hard because students and faculty were leaving to go on spring break, but overall the people who did show up had a good time," said Kari Klemme, who works with marketing at the college and helped to organize the event.

She said students always get free lift tickets, but the free ski rentals were what made the event different for them.

According to Klemme the event provided an opportunity for some staff members families to ski for the first time.

Kim Zeckovich, the college's director of marketing and admissions, called it a nice turnout, but that it was hard to know how many people participated as staff or students, as the ski hill was also open to the public at the same time.
