Ironwood - In honor of Youth Art Month, the Downtown Art Place in Ironwood is sponsoring an exhibit in the concourse of the neighboring Historic Ironwood Theatre featuring artwork by area students.

"The YAM exhibition is a good opportunity for children to display their art in a gallery setting," said Polly Barbacovi, a DAP artist.

The artwork can be viewed during gallery hours, which are from noon-4 p.m. on Tuesdays through Sundays. The exhibition opened on Thursday and closes on March 31, according to the DAP announcement.

The Downtown Art Place sponsors a youth art exhibition every March. Another DAP artist, Peg Sandin, invited local schools to submit artwork by their students and received the work directly from the schools' art teachers.

This year, the participating students are from Carol Kariainen's K-12 art class at Ironwood Area Schools, Rachael Hendges's K-12 art class at Bessemer Area Schools, Candace Jacob's art class at Wakefield-Marenisco School District and Deborah Tijan's art class at Northwoods Christian Academy in Hurley. Jacob is also a DAP artist herself and has work on display in the gallery.

Sandin said that because of pandemic, they thought there would be no reception for the student artists. However, Sandine said that the pandemic "seems to be lifting," so she plans to ask the theater board if they can have a reception and pizza party at the end of the month. She said that no decision on the gathering had been made as of Monday.
