Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
In the aftermath of warm weather and temperatures above 50 degrees this past weekend, the Iron County Snowmobile and ATV/UTV Trails were closed for the winter season at 8 a.m. on Monday.
The Iron County Forestry and Parks Department can legally keep the trails open until March 31, but they closed the trails 10 days early this year because of the warm weather and rain, Office Manager and Trail Coordinator Tara Krall said to the Daily Globe on Monday.
When the rest of the snow melts and the ice gives way, the year-round trails will be re-opened sometime in mid-May depending on the weather conditions, Krall said.
Snowmobile Trail 13 was closed from March 7-10 for work on Weber Creek bridge, north of Mercer. Iron County forestry department staff replaced the decking and railings on the 20-foot by 12-foot bridge. The bridge and the trail were re-opened on March 10, but the trail will be closed until much later this year as it is a winter-only trail.
Krall said that the estimated cost of replacing the decking and railings on the Weber Creek bridge was $23,300, but the cost was covered by a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
