Ironwood — The Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education approved a preliminary list of Luther L. Wright students slated to graduate this year based on their current grades at its regular meeting on Monday.
Board Secretary Carolyn Mieloszyk told the Daily Globe that these students are on track to graduate provided their good performance continues.
The board also approved the May 2022 alternative education graduates as well as the graduation exception requests. According to the events calendar on the school website, this year’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for May 27.
The board approved a personnel report that included the hiring of Adam Mackey as 9-12 special education teacher, Casey Carlson as 7-12 social studies teacher, Courtney Oja as a paraprofessional, Samuel Gresham as a paraprofessional and bus driver, and John Tuzee as bus driver. All these hires were made effective earlier this month.
The board also approved the retirement of high school quiz bowl advisor and head track coach Ted Sim and special education teacher Vicki Watson, effective June 4 and June 30. The board had already approved Sim’s retirement from his secondary social studies teaching position in March. Paraprofessionals Rachel Nowicki and Stephanie Rosenberg’s resignations were effective April 8 and April 14, while 7-12 student senate advisor Trisha Winn and custodian Michael Gallagher’s resignations will be effective June 3.
Also at the meeting, Luppino Inc. was awarded a contract for the construction of a steel stud-framed curtain for the school’s wood and metal shop. The Hurley-based general contractor made a bid in the amount of $7,100 to include materials and labor. Mieloszyk said that this curtain will serve as a mechanism to separate the wood shop’s and the metal shop’s equipment.
Superintendent Travis Powell also acknowledged donations from the Ironwood Booster Club, Ryan Osterman Memorial, O’Reilly Auto Parts and area residents Jason and Carissa Hofstede and Jennifer Zysk towards the school’s weight room upgrade. K-12 Principal Melissa Nigh said that the school’s custodians painted the weight room over spring break, making the first step in getting it ready for summer use.
The board also:
—Approved the student accident insurance renewal in the amount of $8,926 for base accident coverage and $622 for catastrophic accident coverage of student athletes for the 2022-2023 school year.
—Acknowledged cash donations from Tyson Properties for the golf team, Rigoni’s Bakery for the softball team and the donation of puzzles from Mike and Cecilia Pisco for the Spanish department.
