Wakefield - The Wakefield-Marenisco School Board met on Monday evening for its monthly meeting. Members discussed the proposed budget for the 2022-2023 school year and heard an update regarding the window project.
The budget was discussed in full at the finance meeting immediately before the board meeting, and the first reading was accepted unanimously by the board.
Additionally, the board approved adding the Non-Homestead Millage Renewal Resolution to the November ballot. The resolution, according to Superintendent Jason Gustafson, is responsible for providing a great amount of the school's funding and goes on the ballot once every 10 years for renewal.
"It provides about $1,400,000 dollars for the school each year," said Gustafson.
The board reiterated that the millage is not a new item, and is simply a renewal of one that currently exists, and thus would not increase the amount people pay in taxes each year.
"There would be no new money involved," said Gustafson after the meeting. The millage affects properties that are not used as the primary residence for the building's owner.
The window project is in full swing and moving along on-schedule, said Gustafson at the meeting, with the north side of the school building having had many windows replaced already.
"It seems that at this point we are not expecting to take any money out of the general fund for the project." said Gustafson.
In other news, the board:
-Discussed the city of Wakefield's Community Recreation Plan. Gustafson explained that by showing their support of the plan, it may open up opportunities for both the city and the school financially. The board motioned to support.
-Heard updates from the business manager and the superintendent.
-Heard an update regarding the removal of posts and fencing from the school's tennis court. A single bid was received and there is a plan to remove the fence and fence posts.
-Bid farewell to business manager Tina Trevarthen, as it was her last meeting. She has served the district for a number of years as business manager.
-Welcomed Tracey Hand to the position of business manager. She has been training with Trevarthen for several months.
-Board president Brad Dalbec announced he will not be re-running for the school board come the end of his term. Dalbec has sat on the board for 16 years, he explained to the Daily Globe after the meeting, and feels it is time for a break. Applications for school board positions are due by July 26.
