Hurley — The Iron County Board of Supervisors heard a presentation by John Will, president of Northwood Technical College, at their regular meeting on Tuesday.

Will told the board that students earned $694,409 worth of college credits during the 2020-2021 school year. Four NTC students placed at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Dallas and two apprentice students took first and second place in the ABC Carpentry state competition. The presentation also highlighted the college’s new health education center in Shell Lake.

Dory Kidder, the president’s office assistant at the college, said that Will regularly provides updates on college programs to all the county boards in the district. She said that this lets the boards know how their tax dollars are being spent.

She also said that this was an opportunity to clarify some misconceptions about the college. To provide a better idea of where the college is located and create broader brand recognition, Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College officially changed its name to Northwood Technical College on Aug. 2, 2021. Kidder said that some community members think that WITC and NTC are two separate entities.

In other news, per a recommendation by the county’s Finance Committee, the county board approved the purchase of an incident command trailer for the sheriff’s department for $60,549.

The county board also approved a road use permit for Zach and Jennifer Salter.
