The 2023 Superior Snowshoe Walks season has a few more walks to go.
Organizer Sam Davey said the season has gone really well, with warmer weather allowing for people to dress in fewer layers.
Speaking at the Feb. 8, Wednesday afternoon walk at Schomberg Park in Oma, Wisconsin, Davey said he advises people to dress for warmer weather than it is.
"Once you get going, start working up a sweat, it feels a lot warmer," said Davey. "We had one week of cold weather, but that was really it. ... I usually tell people that if it's zero out, dress for 20; but if it's 20, dress for 40."
The weekly Wednesday walks include an afternoon group beginning at 1 p.m. and the evening walks start at 6:30 p.m. Walks vary in length and difficulty, but the group is more than happy to wait for people to catch up, especially at trail intersections.
Group sizes vary. The afternoon gathering on Feb. 8 saw around 15 people participating, which Davey said was around average. "Our numbers have stayed around the same the last few years."
Wednesday walks for the remainder of their season include:
Feb. 22: Michigan Welcome Center on U.S. 2 in Ironwood.
March 1: Miners Memorial Heritage Park from the Norrie Club in Ironwood.
March 8: Mt. Zion in Ironwood.
March 15: Miners Memorial Heritage Park from the Aurora Club, including a potluck afterward.
For those unable to make it to the Wednesday walks, the group has also tried to do walks on Sundays, which they post on their Facebook page. The locations for these walks are determined a few days in advance by Davey.
