HURLEY, Wis. - Gloria L. Maniaci, 90, of Hurley, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023.
Gloria was born on July 28, 1932, in Ironwood, Michigan, a daughter of Alphonse and Lauraine (Catori) Giannunzio. She attended St. Mary's School in Hurley and graduated in 1949 from the Hurley High School. Gloria was a proud cheerleader for the 1949 Hurley Midgets State Basketball Championship team.
After graduation, Gloria worked as a secretary at the Montreal Mining office. After a few years, she decided she wanted to see more of the world, moved to Minneapolis and began her career as a flight attendant for North Central Airlines. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Europe. While working for North Central, she met and made many lifelong friends and eventually met her future husband.
On Feb. 14, 1962, Gloria married Stephen J. Maniaci, and they settled in Wayzata, Minnesota. Together they traveled on many Airstream rallies, enjoyed camping in northern Wisconsin and wintering in Scottsdale, Arizona. In 2014, they left Minnesota and Arizona and moved to Hurley. Gloria was happy to be back home. She loved family gatherings and hosting parties and celebrations.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Steve, on Sept. 14, 2020; a brother, John Giannunzio; two sisters, Margaret Sokolowski and Rose Aimone; her brothers-in-law, Edward Sokolowski, Angelo Aimone and Jack Maneage; and her sister-in-law, Joyce Maneage.
Her memory lives on with nieces and nephews, Ed Sokolowski, Suzanne Fung, Paulette (John) Kukula, Angelo (Janet) Aimone, Margaret Aimone, Elizabeth Sweeney, John Giannunzio Jr., and Mike Maneage; great-nieces and great-nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
A celebration of Gloria's life will be held at a later date.
