Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
MERRILL, Wis. - Mary Ann Mattson, 76, of Iron Belt, moved to her Heavenly home on Monday, May 8, 2023, at the Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill.
Mary was born on April 2, 1947, in Chicago, to Edward and Patricia (Cox) Matusewic. Mary was united in marriage to Jerome "Jerry" on Sept. 5, 1964. Jerry was the center of Mary's universe. They were high school sweethearts and spent more than 60 years together. One of the things they enjoyed was taking motorcycle rides. They took trips to Keystone, South Dakota, Bowling Green, Kentucky, and many day trips throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. As long as Mary and Jerry were together, side by side, they were happy and content.
Mary loved spending time with family and friends. Family was a huge part of her life - spending time with her children and grandchildren filled her heart and brought her so much joy. In her final weeks, Mary expressed how blessed she felt to have had such a good life. She had a lot of pride in the family she and Jerry created and was at peace knowing her life was lived to the fullest alongside her family.
She worked at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital as a dietary aide for more than 10 years. Prior to working at the hospital, she was the head housekeeper at Holiday Inn for several years.
In retirement, Mary did volunteer work. She enjoyed volunteering at the Iron County Food Pantry every Monday. While volunteering at the pantry, she made many good friends. She also was on the board of directors at the Hurley Senior Center.
Mary was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley.
Mary will be missed by her husband of 58 years, Jerry; children, Paul (Rori) Mattson, Brian (Nancy) Mattson, Stacy Mattson and Kim (Robert) Maki; brother, Joseph Matusewic (Bernice); sister-in-law, Gail Matusewic; and grandchildren, Jeremy Mattson, Garrett Mattson, Cassidy Miller, Lucas Mattson, Amanda Mattson, Kiefer Kleinschmidt, Connor Kleinschmidt, Haley Maki and Sydney Maki. Mary is further and survived by several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by father, Edward; mother, Patricia Matusewic; sisters, Helen Rivers, Ginger Michniak, Judith Miller and Margaret Escalante; brothers, Eddie Matusewic, Donald Matusewic and Daniel Matusewic.
Visitation for Mary will be on Friday, May 19, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. The luncheon will be held in the church basement immediately following the service. Inurnment will take place at the Iron Belt Cemetery.
"Mary was the heart of our family. She was always there for all of us whenever needed. We will deeply miss her and we will forever have a void in our hearts. We know you're in heaven watching over us, until we meet again, rest in heavenly peace."
