Peter J. Montonati

HURLEY, Wis. — Peter J. Montonati passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, May 17, 2023.

Born March 26, 1939, to Peter Montonati and Lucy (Tuoro) Montonati, Peter was the eldest of three siblings.

While attending Bessemer Schools and Gogebic Community College Peter helped his father run the family auto repair business, eventually taking over the business. He also worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He enjoyed owning Harley-Davidson motorcycles and distinctive automobiles.

He met Linda (Cavosie) Wall in 1982, and they married in 1988. Pete and Linda were a well know couple along the Gogebic Range. Pete spent time encouraging Linda’s many hobbies, and he often helped find her special hobby materials, most notably diamond willow that Linda fashioned into beautiful walking sticks.

Pete spent his retirement supporting local high school and college sports, collecting lost golf balls, and donating them to the Hurley High School Athletic Department. He enjoyed traveling with the teams to away games, tinkering at his garages, and frequent trips to the Dairy Queen when his grandnieces visited.

He also enjoyed gardening, berry picking, maintaining and improving several local gun ranges, and taking long walks in the woods, often returning with a winter supply of mushrooms.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Lucy; and his brother, William.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Montonati; stepchildren, Edward Wall, Colleen Dunahee and Michael Wall; his sister, Annette Kudwa, brother-in-law, Ben Kudwa; sister-in-law, Linda (Stella) Montonati; niece, Erinn Kudwa (Barnes); nephew, Mark Montonati; niece, Kristi Montonati; and several grand-nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no services. Donations in Pete Montonati’s memory can be sent to the Hurley High School Athletic Department.
