Mary Jo Reed

HURLEY, Wis. - Mary Jo Reed of Hurley passed away peacefully on June 1, 2023. She was born on Nov. 19, 1933, to Marvin and Helen DeSonia.

Mary Jo graduated from St. Ambrose High School in Ironwood, Michigan, as a distinguished member of the National Honor Society and attended Gogebic Community College for one year. After that, she worked for 15 years for the city of Ironwood and the Lake Superior District Power Company. In 1965, she married Patrick Reed; after marrying Pat, she devoted herself to raising a family, finding out firsthand what real work truly meant.

She was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish in Hurley, where she taught CCD classes and managed the school lunch program for 13 years.

Mary Jo cherished spending time with her large group of friends, particularly her lifelong best friend, Jean. In her younger years, she found joy in ice and roller skating.

Mary Jo was an avid reader and took pleasure in collecting books, antiques and other unique items. She loved to travel and explore new places. Other interests included knitting and crocheting things for her family and friends. Mary Jo was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, always optimistic that this was going to be the year.

One of Mary Jo's favorite pastimes was spending time at the family cottage on Little Pine Lake. She would eagerly jump into the water first and be the last one out.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Pat.

Mary Jo is survived by her three children, Mike (Kristin), Pat (Angelica) and Dan (Linda); as well as her four grandchildren, Brandi (Jamie), Cody (Emily), Jack and Ryan.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 10, with visitation prior at 10 She will be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the compassionate nurses and staff at Villa Maria Health and Rehab for their exceptional care.
