Marenisco — Residents of Marenisco Township had the opportunity last weekend to dispose of unwanted items at an annual cleanup.

According to Township Supervisor Bruce Mahler, five dumpsters were filled during the event.

“That was the end of the grace period for people who have blight issues,” he said, adding that any such folks could be receiving a blight visit from the township this week.

In other news, Mahler said that members of the township’s Board of Trustees discussed on Monday evening the possibility of paving Hall Street, next to the Marenisco Town Hall, and Presque Isle Street in 2024.

“We’ll make the decision by this fall,” he said, noting that the township’s fiscal year runs from April to April.

Mahler said the board also finalized a contract with the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region to have that office produce an update for the township’s 5-year recreation plan.

Finally, the township has finalized its Fourth of July schedule for this year.

“We’ve got four days set up, starting with a music festival that my son, Erik, is organizing,” said Mahler.

Regarding the music festival on July 1, for which nine acts are scheduled, he said, “It’ll be all day in the pavilion, and there will be refreshments.”

Major highlights of remaining days will be a town picnic on July 2, a street dance and golf tournament on July 3, and on July 4 a parade, performance by Marty’s Goldenaires and a picnic and turkey feed in the trailhead pavilion.

Many other activities also are scheduled throughout the four days.
