Benedict J. Cvengros

BESSEMER, Mich. - Benedict J. Cvengros, 92, a longtime resident of Bessemer, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2023, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Benedict was born on June 19, 1931, in Ironwood, a son of Stephen and Josephine (Gorilla) Cvengros.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Benedict was a faithful member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church in Bessemer.

In his free time, he enjoyed fishing with his nephew, Joey Templer.

For many years, Benedict worked at Ahonen's Mill in Ironwood. He concluded his working career as a custodian at the Bessemer and Ironwood banks.

Benedict is survived by his sister, Dorothy DeSantis, Placerville, California; many nieces and nephews, including his nephew and best buddy, Joey; the Guglielmotto family, who classified him as family; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers and sisters; the love of his life for more than 60 years, Doris M. Scavarda, on May 19, 2021; and his two four-legged friends, Joey 1 and Joey 2.

Graveside committal services were held Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m., at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bessemer, with the Rev. Dominic Agyapong presiding.

Full military honors were accorded by the Bessemer American Legion Post 27 and Bessemer Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3673 Honor Guard, assisted by the U.P. Funeral Honors Team.

Interment followed.
