Ironwood — The Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education voted to approve the transfer of the former Norrie School property to the city at its meeting Monday evening.
The board authorized Superintendent Travis Powell to sign papers transferring ownership of the property to the city of Ironwood. The City Commission approved the idea of accepting the property for free at its meeting last week.
The board also briefly discussed the annual summer tax resolution, which was approved unanimously by the board. There was some discussion regarding the reasons why the board holds the vote for the resolution in December
“The statute has where schools do their taxation in the winter,” said Powell. “So in order to do the collection in the summer, we pass the resolution in the winter.”
He said the summer collection was decided upon a number of years ago, long before the current board was elected.
“I don’t see any reason why we should change it,” said Powell. He said the board, if it wanted to change the collection pattern in the future, could explore it at a future date.
The board also approved renewing their membership with the Ironwood Chamber of Commerce at a cost of $195 per year.
