HURLEY - The Hurley K-12 School students celebrated Festival de Navidad on Wednesday, Dec. 20, the last day of school before the holiday break. Students from the school's Spanish classes worked to put on a fun event for the student body.
"Our Spanish 1 and 2 students put it on every year," said teacher Kirsten "Kirkie" Pecotte. "They pick a Spanish speaking country, and base either a craft, a food or an activity off of it."
The students this year were set up around the elementary gymnasium as students of all ages went through to try food cooked by their fellow students, play games and win prizes.
Pecotte said that people paid using tickets the school referred to as "pesos" for the event, which they could buy at the entrance and exchange at different tables for the activities.
"The kids love it, it is a blast every year," said Pecotte.
The money raised goes back into the Spanish classes' account, and can go toward a potential trip or other activity, depending on their interests.
"We are going to talk about it after the new year and see what the kids might be interested in. We try to base it off of languages and culture," said Pecotte.
This year almost 60 students set up in the gym for the event.
"They have been working on it for the last month, making posters and deciding what they wanted to do," said Pecotte.
The project encourages the students to research into the country they made posters for, and practice their language skills, she said.
