Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties
WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Walter David Hilty, 74, passed away on Oct. 16, 2023, from complications of COVID. Walter was born on Sept. 29, 1949, in White Township, Pennsylvania. Walt was an obstinate bull-headed man that persevered through decades of ongoing health issues. He was a loving husband, a great stay-at-home dad and a superior cook.
Walt, known to many as "David," served in the U.S. Army from 1973 to 1976. After his time in the Army in Alaska, David pursued a career as a machinist in Texas. In 1984, he married Amy and moved to Michigan where he earned an associate degree in food service at Gogebic Community College. He worked as a cook until his retirement in 1995.
David loved to hunt, and he was an excellent shot. In later years, despite being wheelchair-bound, he continued to indulge in his passion for fishing.
David is survived by his wife of 39 years, Amy Hilty; his sons, George and Steven Hilty; his brother, Robert Hilty; sisters, Glenna Moser, JoSue Owens and Debbie Cockran; and his close friend, Phyllis Kleimola. He was preceded in death by his beloved stepfather, George Disko; and his mother, Grace Hilty.
Cremation has taken place. In the future, his ashes will be spread at his favorite fishing spot per his request. He was a good man and we all miss him terribly.
To David,
I hope you are free of pain and suffering. I hope you are walking and can even run with Dugan if you'd like. I can almost see you fishing with George Disko. Please tell my mom I love her "like a rock." Until we meet again.
Love, Amy
