Serving Gogebic, Iron and Ontonagon Counties

Ironwood - Gogebic Community College's new president, Chris Patritto, heard ideas from the community at a listening session on Feb. 22. He encouraged people to share their thoughts on what GCC could improve upon in the future.
One of the largest talking points was the future of the college pool, which was closed down more than a decade ago. Patritto said that at this time there is no plan at all regarding the pool, whether that be to open it, demolish that portion of the Lindquist Center, or a third option of repurposing the space for something else.
He said that due to how long it has been since the pool held water, all of the pipe work would need to be replaced, leading to a complete rebuild of the pool and its systems, which would come with a hefty price tag.
"Pools are expensive to run, and I think that is why you are seeing less and less of them," said Patritto.
He spoke with those in attendance at length, writing down ideas that were shared on how the college can improve, as well as feedback about what they are doing well, such as continuation of niche programs, and the "wonderful graduations" the college holds.
Some of the other talking points at the event included: bringing the community to the college, ideas for new courses that could be offered, the possibility of daycare for students who are parents, and improving the activities for students outside of the classroom setting, such as better workout spaces and student spaces as a whole.
A second listening session is planned for tonight at the Houghton campus.
