An overnight fire burned Lutey's Flower Shop on the corner of Ayer and Mansfield streets in Ironwood into Wednesday morning. Firefighters from multiple departments poured water on the structure from above and the street. Despite strong winds, firefighters were able to control the fire from spreading to nearby structures. The street reopened before dawn. ***UPDATE: Ironwood Public Safety Department officers responded to an 11:36 p.m. Tuesday 911 call reporting a lot smoke coming from the flower shop, according to a post-press time IPSD release on Wednesday. Upon arrival firefighters saw the basement and ground level were both on fire. Because of the close proximity to power lines and several other structures they requested assistance from Xcel Energy and the Hurley Fire Department. Officials observed that the house just 5 feet to the south of the flower shop was filling with smoke. They quickly went to the door and were able to wake the resident, who is also the owner of the shop and evacuated her. The release did not mention her name, but said she suffered from minor smoke inhalation and there were no other injuries. Officers battled the fire for approximately 5 hours and were able to protect the surrounding structures and part of the greenhouse that is attached to the building. The incident remains under investigation.
