Bessemer --- The Gogebic Miners beat Hurley 10-5 in five innings just before the rain came Monday evening at Massie Field.

"Good win for these kids," Gogebic coach Leo Ribich said. "They're fairly young, a boost of confidence for them to start the season. It's only our second game of the year, we'll only get better from there."

CJ Wainio struck out 10 and got the complete-game win for the Miners.

"He just threw strikes and kept very consistent," Ribich said. "He had a good curveball that worked well for him today. Young kid, only in 10th grade."

Hurley coach Bart Innes said the Northstars didn't put enough balls in play with the high number of strikeouts, but they did have a lot of runners on base.

"He's definitely the best pitcher we've seen so far this season," he said.

Hurley took the early lead on an RBI single by Isaac Innes, and the Miners tied it with a double by Carter Cole in the bottom of the second.

The Northstars scored a pair of runs in the top of the third. Devin Soltis led off with a triple and he scored on another triple by Jack Rowe, who scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

The Miners tied it right back up on a two-run bloop single by Braylon Lane. It was 4-3 when Cayden Harju drove in two runs with a single. Later in the inning, Lane drove in two more runs with another soft single to put the Miners up 10-3.

"These kids been working hard at hitting," Ribich said.

Soltis drove in another run to make it 10-4 in the fourth, but the Northstars had the bases loaded with one out and couldn't score. Hurley added a run in the fifth but couldn't get any closer.

Jack Caudill took the loss in 2 2/3 innings and Soltis finished it.

Hurley --- The Hurley baseball team beat Mellen 3-1 Thursday.

Mellen's leadoff hitter single and scored, but the Granite Diggers didn't anything to that.

Hurley's Devin Soltis tripled and had an RBI single, Isaac Innes had a single and an RBI.

Innes got the win, striking out 10 and walking two in 4 2/3 innings. Riley Holm closed out, picking up the save with five punchouts.

"We played a well-rounded game tonight," Hurley coach Bart Innes said. "We left a lot of runners out there tonight. Just looking to get jumpstarted at the bottom of the order. We'll get there."
