Gremlins sweep Ironwood's soggy Kraemer

Ironwood --- The winter’s snow was long gone, a rare feat for Ironwood’s annual Kraemer Invitational track-and-field meet.

Also wishing for good weather for the late April meet at Longyear Field may have been asking a bit much, though. The off-and-on rain may not have been pleasant to compete in, but at least they got the oft-canceled meet completed.

“That was a tough one,” E-TC coach Brad Besonen said. “But the kids did fantastic.”

He was impressed with the times the Panthers ‘ runners ended up with, and how well they did in the discus, all things considered.

“The weather was obviously not ideal, but I was glad there were no injuries due to slippery conditions,” Ontonagon coach Brian Amos said. “It’s always a concern for me when it’s wet, but thankfully it wasn’t a problem.”

Houghton swept the boys and girls meet by large margins. The Class B Gremlins outsized the rest of the small-school field, but local athletes still came up with some strong performances of their own. That was especially true in the sprints.

Watersmeet’s Thomas Caron won both the 200 and 400 dashes and Ontonagon’s Violet Amos pulled off the same feat on the girls side. Hurley’s Jaana Aukee won the 100 dash and Bessemer’s Tommy Trudgeon won the boys 100.

“Violet had a great day and I was proud of her and all the rest of the girls,” coach Amos said. “The six of them took third overall.”

Watersmeet coach George Peterson III said Caron is one of the hardest working athletes he has coached.

“In my 38 years of coaching track, I can say that he has already been the most successful track athlete that I have ever coached,” Peterson said. “As we go through his junior season, we are excited about the opportunities in front of him, including opening up some potential opportunities for a chance to continue his track desires after he graduates from the Nimrod Nation.”

The Northstars’ Gavin Moore placed first in the shot put and the Speedboys’ Neal Rand won the discus.

Ironwood’s Bree Delich came out on top of a close battle in the high jump and teammate Emma Worden won the shot put.

The Ironwood girls team was second with Ontonagon third and Hurley fourth. The Bessemer boys placed second with Hurley fourth and Ironwood fifth.

“I only had five boys and they took seventh overall. Really proud of all my kids,” Amos said.

All four of the Panthers who took part in the discus ended up with personal best throws, a pretty good accomplishment with how hard it was to keep the disc clean and dry.

Houghton’s Tessa Rauotila won the 3,200 with Ewen-Trout Creek’s Bree Besonen second and teammate Leona Schutz fourth. That also gave Besonen the second best time (13:40.81) in the U.P. in Division 3 on athletic.net.

The two-mile proved to be the most miserable event of the day. The rain fell as hard as it had all day and the cool and wet conditions were getting old by the second-to-the-last event of the evening.

“Add on just sitting there being cold for four hours plus on top of that doesn’t put you in a good state of mind to run that,” Besonen said. “I thought Leona and Bree did great in that race, considering the conditions. Their feet were soaked and there was water in their shoes, you couldn’t keep them dry at all in that track. There was standing water in quite a few of the low spots throughout that race. I was really happy with what they did in there. Just running it even at that point was a win, but to get a 2 and a 4 out there.”
