The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners received a clean audit for the fiscal year of 2022-23.
CPA Joe Verlin of Gabridge and Company of Grand Rapids provided the related report at the board's May 8 meeting.
"Everything came back clean as of Sept. 30, 2023," said Verlin in the virtual presentation. "Your numbers were verifiable."
Verlin said that county staff members were able to provide "accurate financial statements" and other related data.
"Is the county better off on Sept. 30, 2023, than it was on Sept. 30, 2022?" asked Verlin. "The answer is yes."
Verlin's written report, presented in the form of a booklet, also said that - as of the end of the past fiscal year - the county's assets and deferred outflows of resources exceeded liabilities and deferred inflows of resources by $25,827,849.
"The county's overall net position increased by $5,857,088 from the prior fiscal year," the report added.
Commissioners voted to receive and file the report, and Commissioner Joseph Bonovetz congratulated county administrator Juliane Giackino, clerk Ramona Collins and treasurer Lisa Hewitt for working with the auditing firm "to get this good report."
Board members also:
-Approved a job estimate of $20,400 by Erickson Roofing and Siding of Bessemer to replace the roof of the county's Natural Resources Center. The board's Economic Development and Capital Improvements Committee, which had met earlier that day, recommended the action.
-Authorized signatures on the 2023-24 Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness Agreement, as requested by Heidi DeRosso, the county's emergency management/911 coordinator. The annual grant of $1,590 is from the Michigan State Police's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division. It requires a 25% match.
-Received and filed a letter of thanks from the Gogebic Miners Baseball Team for the board's recent donation to the team.
-Voted to readvertise for a position on the board of directors for the county's Department of Health and Human Services. No applications were submitted in relation to the first advertisement.
The board's next regular meeting will be on May 22 at 5 p.m. in the Gogebic County Courthouse.
