Ironwood sweeps 1st LaBlonde Memorial meet

IRONWOOD --- The host Ironwood boys and girls both won the first Jim LaBlonde Memorial track-and-field invite Saturday.

The school started the meet to honor LaBlonde, a member of the school’s athletic hall of fame who died five years ago. The 1997 graduate still holds the school records in the 100 and 200 dashes with times of 11.13 and 22.78 seconds, respectively.

His parents, Jim and Marlene and his sister Dena Lundin and brother-in-law Dave Lundin attended the meet.

“The LaBlonde Invite was more than just a typical track meet; it was a celebration of Jim LaBlonde’s legacy and achievements in track-and-field for our school,” Ironwood coach Ceci Aho said. “It was a special atmosphere honoring someone who contributed so much to the sport and to our school’s community.”

Both Red Devil teams ended the day with big wins.

“Winning both the boys and girls events was incredibly satisfying,” Aho said. “It’s always a great feeling when all the hard work pays off in such a tangible way. We were coming off seven meets in two weeks, and even though it was a small meet, athletes brought their A game for this meet.”

The Michigan teams turn their attention to the regional this week with Ironwood headed to Ishpeming Thursday for a Division 2 meet, while the rest of the area teams go to Lake Linden for the D-3 meet the same day.

Several Ironwood athletes continued their winning ways Saturday and are hoping it keeps up for the regional. That includes Aubrey Smith in the distance events, Talon Hughes in the 110 hurdles and Emma Worden in the throws.

“Talon Hughes’s pursuit of breaking the school record in running and hurdles is incredibly impressive,” Aho said.

She said Smith has consistently improved in the 800 and 1,600 runs.

“Lowering her times with each race not only contributes valuable points to the team but also showcases her resilience and determination,” Aho said.

Worden also keeps getting better in the throws.

“Her consistent progress in the throwing events demonstrates her hard work and commitment to mastering her technique,” she said.
