Bessemer --- Bessemer’s Tommy Trudgeon put his name in one record book Thursday and he’s hoping to rewrite a couple more before his senior season is finished.

His time of 11.60 seconds was the fastest 100-meter dash in the history of Bessemer’s Marcy Bracket Invitational.

“It was on my radar,” Trudgeon said. “I still got the school record to beat.”

The old record was 11.62 seconds, set by South Shore-Washburn’s Brett Bulovsky in 2014.

“It’s awesome, I am so happy for him,” Bessemer coach Valerie Aijala said.

The school record he’s referring to is 11.27 seconds set by Casey Trevarthen in 2006. He was closer at last week’s meet in Ashland at 11.40 seconds.

Trudgeon is also hoping to be a U.P. champion, and even a U.P. record holder. The fastest time in the history of the Division 3 race is 11.12 seconds.

He ran fast in Ashland despite the cold weather by Lake Superior and it wasn’t a lot warmer for the Bracket. Some favorable conditions and the rubberized track at the U.P. Finals in Kingsford should help him meet his goals, Aijala said.

“I think he’s really been putting time I know in the offseason with working out in the weight room and being in three sports,” she said of Trudgeon, who also won the 200 dash Thursday. “I know this year he did football (wide receiver), it really helped. I know Mr. (Nick) Heikkila was really working on getting him to sprint too for football. I just think he’s really been dedicated to putting in the extra time to getting faster for sprinting, especially for track, so that’s been big for us.”

The Speedboys won the team event with Ironwood finishing runner-up.

The throwers have been a big part of their success, led by Neal Rand, who won the discus and finished second in the shot put. He’s got his own shot and discus to practice at home on the farm. He hit the weight room, too, Aijala said.

“He throws out in the fields,” she said. “He bought his own stuff because he wants to get better and he practices at home.”

West Iron County won the girls meet with Ironwood runner-up.

The Wykons were led by standout Danica Shamion, who won the high jump and the 100, 200 and 400 dashes. She’s committed to the track-and-field program at Division I Central Michigan University.

The Devils’ Aubrey Smith won the 800 and 1,600 runs. Teammate Emma Worden placed first in both the shot put and discus.

The Ewen-Trout Creek girls finished third.

“I’m really happy for our little crew,” E-TC coach Brad Besonen said of his six-person team. “We didn’t see that coming at all this year in any of the meets we would go to, but things shook out right. Our girls performed very well, there were a lot of PRs in there. Leona (Schutz) and Bree (Besonen) running distance, there’s not a lot of kids sometimes in those distance races. They’re good at them and they run a full slate, so that gave us a lot of opportunities to get some points if they run well and they did. And just the people that were there for other schools worked out in our favor too to maximize the points we could get.”
