HURLEY, Wis. - Carl Mockross, 90, of Pine Lake, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2024, at the Villa Maria Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hurley.
Carl was born on Nov. 30, 1933, in Ladysmith, the son of Harry and Florence (Tormey) Mockross. After graduating from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood, Carl and his high school sweetheart, Joan Erickson, were married on Dec. 29, 1955. His career in construction included being owner of Peninsula Roofing and Erickson Company Manufacturing, followed by monument sales before finally retiring.
After retirement, Carl and Joan spent winters in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, making many new friends, exploring the area and visiting national parks.
Carl's passion was music and the theater. In earlier years he sang in and directed several church choirs. He also did lighting and set building for the Indianhead Summer Theatre. This led to being a founding member of Theatre North in Ironwood. At Theatre North he served as a board member as well as lighting director and/or stage manager for many productions over many years. As the go-to construction guy, he helped usher the group into its current building on Lake Road.
Carl is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Dan Johnson of Pine Lake and Minneapolis; niece, Julie (Chris Ball) Schoening; nephews, Roger Schoening and Joel (Diane) Lahti; and his grand-dogs, Milo and Gromit. We will miss him deeply.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Joan, in 2020; brother, Robert; and sister, Claire Lahti.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Carl's caregivers during his final years.
No formal services are taking place. Carl and Joan are being buried together at Mercer Cemetery.
