Ramsay - Construction is now underway in Ramsay toward a new U.S. Post Office.
That was the word Tuesday from Josh Barrett of Lang Contractors in Flushing, Mich.
"We're the prime contractor for the Post Office for the whole state of Michigan," he said. "And Florida."
Ground was broken for the project on June 13.
In relation to the base, Barrett said, "We've got everything dug out for the footings and stem walls," adding that stem walls are foundation walls. "I'm pushing to try to get it done by the first week of July."
Moving dirt at the site on Tuesday was John Woolbright of Rock Solid Exteriors in Mount Clemens.
Barrett said Ruotsala Construction of Ironwood also "is going to be doing a lot of the concrete work."
A paved parking lot also will be laid on the property.
He added that Lakenen Crane and Rigging Service of Marquette then is expected to place a ready-made, mobile structure upon the site, which is on the south side of the main street, below where the former Ramsay Elementary School sits.
The land where the new Post Office will be located is owned by Ramsay's Cornerstone Church, which lobbied for the construction after the previous building - which sat higher on the north side of the main street - was closed on March 8 of 2019 and demolished due to structural issues.
Since then, Ramsay residents - who do not have mailboxes - have been picking up their mail from the U.S. Post Office in Wakefield.
An opening date has not yet been announced for the new Ramsay Post Office.
