Marenisco TOWNSHIP — Members of the Marenisco Board of Trustees are pleased with how the public cooperated with new, stricter rules relating to a spring cleanup that occurred on June 15-16.

“That went very smoothly,” said township supervisor Bruce Mahler on Tuesday. “We had nobody show up who didn’t have a voucher.”

The township changed its terms this year in relation to the cleanup, requiring that residents register in advance at the town hall and acquire a voucher.

Mahler said that this year’s restrictions resulted in nobody bringing in trash from outside of the township.

“In the past, we did as many as eight of those roll-out boxes,” he said in relation to the dumpsters used to collect waste.

Last year, he said the township spent about $4,500 to process what people delivered.

This year, he said the township filled three and one-half dumpsters.

In other news, Mahler said, “We’re all set for the Fourth of July.”

The township traditionally offers a parade, a performance by Marty’s Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corps, games, fireworks and plenty of food and fun.

A full schedule will be shared before the holiday, but Mahler said one new element that began last year is returning again on July 6 from noon to 10 p.m. That’s the 2nd annual Marenisco Music Festival, organized by his son, Eric Mahler.

The music festival will take place in the township’s main pavilion between Fair Avenue (M-64) and Hall Street, where the township office is located. The event also will include refreshments.

At Monday evening’s Board of Trustees meeting, Mahler said members also voted to fund a component to fix the water softener at the West Shore station of the Lake Gogebic Volunteer Fire Department, which also has a second station on the east shore.

Due to Marenisco Township being the state’s second largest township in area, it also supports the Marenisco Volunteer Fire Department, which has its main station in the town hall complex.

The board’s next regular meeting will be on July 15 at 6 p.m. in the Marenisco Town Hall.
