OVERLOOKING Sunday Lake in the distance, Wakefield's main street shows the continuing mark of utility and street construction on June 14. According to City Manager Robert Brown Jr., Phase 1 of a multi-part project is underway to replace critical water mains that link the city's two water storage tanks. The city also will replace lateral private services. In addition, from Sunday Lake to Nunnemacher streets, a complete replacement of the street, curb, gutter, and sidewalks will occur. The city also will upgrade street lighting with a design to complement lighting around Sunday Lake. As Brown noted, "The project will eliminate the potential of a catastrophic failure of the water infrastructure; replace waterlines that may contain lead; and ensure our residents have access to safe, clean, and affordable water over the next 80 years."
