Bessemer — The Bessemer City Council approved on Monday evening an agreement in which it will serve as the parking host of the Duet Bike outreach.

In part due to the Iron Belle Trail running through the city, the Duet Bike Partners requested that the city agree to the responsibility during “bikeable” weather.

Council members further offered to help in any other way they can.

The Duet Bike allows an able-bodied rider to transport on the same bike a person with disabilities, thereby allowing that person to enjoy a bike ride.

In other news, the council also:

— Approved a public risk insurance renewal for the period of July 1 of this year through July 1, 2025. The premium increase of $2,368.60 will result in a total charge of $22,270.

—Approved a resolution to apply for a category B grant, for a maximum of $130,000, for road resurfacing on Cinnabar and N. East Street.

—Approved a neighborhood zoning variance for Stephen Maxinoski to build a garage at 406 W. Lead St. Maxinoski had letters of approval from neighbors.

—Approved a draw of $22,914.42 from the city’s Drinking Water Asset Management fund in relation to water infrastructure.

—Approved a U.S. Department of Agriculture water project change order increase of $4,965.15 and a USDA wastewater project order.

— Approved a USDA wastewater change order of $18,651.

Council members also discussed regulating the Osmose Compost Site more stringently due to frequent dumping of non-compostable materials there.

The council’s next regular meeting will be on July 8 at 6 p.m. in the council chamber of the Bessemer City Hall.
