James Ernest Oberst

IRONWOOD, Mich. - James "Obe" Ernest Oberst, 86, of Ironwood, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2024, with his family by his side.

James was born on Dec. 18, 1937. He resided at Skyview Nursing Home for the last seven months, where he met many wonderful people who loved him. Prior to that, he resided in his family home for the last 30 years in Ironwood. He was also a resident of Florence, Oregon, for eight years.

James was a hard worker. He had many fulfilling jobs as a young man. For many years he made motorhomes and trailers at Schulz Motorhome Factory in Ironwood. When he moved to Oregon, he also made motorhomes.

Jim loved fishing, boating, hunting, dancing, music and spending time with his family. Motorcycles, boats and fancy cars were his passions. When he returned home from Oregon, his morning routine was stopping at "Ben's Place" for coffee and breakfast. He had a certain way of making everyone smile. Everyone loved him.

Jim has been battling cancer for over 30 years. He truly was an amazing man with a strong will to live.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Zawlocki; step-father, Ben Zawlocki; father, Ernest Oberst; brothers, Richard Oberst and Dan Oberst; sister, Carolyn Johnson; granddaughters, Chelsea and Christy; nephews, Scott and Jordan; and his niece, Brenda.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Lisa Campbell, Paula Decicco and Lori Reid; sons, Cory Oberst and Steven Oberst; sister, Kathy (Dennis) Anderson; grandchildren, Heather, Rhana (Pete), Stevie, Gage, Alena, LaRissa, Tiana and Carmen; great-grandchildren, Carter, Ty, Wyatt, Liam, Cami and Miles; and many more. He is further survived by a niece, Candy (Bryce); and many more nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews, Tyler, Alexis, Kaylie; and many more family and friends not included here.

Visitation for Jim will be held on Friday, July 5, from 11 a.m. until the funeral service, beginning at 1 p.m. at the McKevitt-Patrick Funeral Home in Ironwood, with Pastor Mike Hill officiating.
