Ironwood — Luther L Wright K-12 School is kicking off its centennial celebration during Festival Ironwood, and organizers have events planned each day to educate the public about their building’s history.
On July 19, the celebration will begin with an opening ceremony in the front of the LLW school at 2:30 p.m. It will feature a welcome by Superintendent Dan Martinson and guest speaker Paul Mattson. Music will be provided by the Ironwood school band.
A drone photo is expected to be taken at the end of the ceremony to mark the occasion. For those who need transportation to the ceremony, the school has arranged for bus transport to leave the Historic Ironwood Depot Park for the school at 2:15 p.m.
On July 20, the school will hold an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be bus rides to and from the school at Festival Ironwood every hour. Buses will load on Suffolk Street, just east of the Depot. Tours will be self-guided, with volunteers throughout the building to assist and answer questions. Anyone is welcome to attend.
The centennial also will have a booth at Festival Ironwood to share more information about the coming year, and to sell merchandise.
Celebrations will continue into the school year, including a Centennial Ball for adults of all ages on Oct. 5 at the Ironwood Memorial Building. Tickets will be sold at the LLW booth at Festival Ironwood. Proceeds will go toward the restoration of the “Superstition” mural in the study hall of the school.
LLW’s History Club is seeking people who have attended the school and would be willing to share stories of their time at the school to be preserved in the StoryCorps virtual archive. The club will perform oral history interviews with persons who visit the booth and fill out the interview form.
